Adelaide, 11th
April 2006. 3pm.
Adelaide’s new airport
terminal got off to a slow start with its teething problems, but it is now in
full swing. I paid a visit there this morning and discovered a light and airy
terminal, busy with travelers booking in for their flights.
The terminal now serves two
national airlines, Qantas and Virgin Blue, as well as several regional and
commuter services. Being also an International Airport it is now serving six
international carriers including, Singapore Airlines, Malaysian Airlines, Air
New Zealand, Qantas and Cathay Pacific.
Singapore Airlines are now
offering a daily service, Air New Zealand 3 flights a week, and Cathay Pacific
will double its flights from two to four per week on June 1st. From
that date there will be an average of 4 flights a day to Asian countries and
beyond. Truly, Adelaide is fast becoming the hub of the Asian wheel.
Adelaide, as many people
know, is one of the main world centres for computer software development. Some
of the world’s brightest software “geeks” live and work in Adelaide. Even
the mighty Microsoft has a development facility in Adelaide. Some of the
best computer games are conceived and developed here.
Now, Adelaide has started
down a new road with the development of the world’s leading programmable i-bot.
Described as the ultimate robot, the i-bot offered readers of Adelaide’s
premier newspaper, the Advertiser, the opportunity to build a fully programmable
robot over 14 days. The idea was developed and the product designed in Adelaide,
and is deemed a world first. Promoted through the sister newspapers, the
Adelaide Advertiser and the Sunday Mail, both part of the international News Ltd
group, it has won a major award at the 71st International Newspaper
marketing Awards in Chicago. The Advertiser will sponsor and promote another
robotics project later this year.
Continuing with robotics,
Adelaide engineering firm HMPS has just signed a multi-million dollar deal to
provide robotic packaging systems, which open cartons, pack, seal and stack
products. Their latest contract is with Wrigley’s, and Sanitarium to deliver
their products to supermarket shelves.
